MYP 1: Norse Mythology: Ragnarok Prophecy

 Dear MYP 1 learners,

Every culture has stories that help explain the world—how it began, how it changes, and even how it might end. In our final mythology lesson, we bring together the three traditions we have explored: Hindu, Greek, and Norse mythology.

Our journey concludes with Ragnarök, the Norse prophecy of the "Twilight of the Gods." Unlike many stories where heroes defeat evil and live happily ever after, Ragnarök tells us that even the gods cannot escape fate. Yet, despite its destruction, the story ends with hope, reminding us that every ending can lead to a new beginning.

As we compare these mythologies, we will discover surprising connections:

  • 🌿 Hindu mythology teaches us about cycles of creation, destruction, and renewal.
  • 🏛️ Greek mythology explores destiny, pride, and the consequences of human choices.

Dear students, In this lesson , we explore the poem “If We Must Die” by Claude McKay and examine how literature presents conflict as a moral and ethical challenge . Through a close reading of the poem, we discuss the speaker’s response to injustice and how dignity, courage, and collective strength shape the way conflict is faced. We pay attention to the context of the poem and the powerful choices of language used by the poet to influence the reader’s emotions. Rather than focusing on violence, the poem encourages us to think about self-respect, unity, and ethical judgement when confronted with oppression. Through reflection and creative responses, students engage with the poem on a personal level, considering how individuals and communities can respond to conflict with integrity and purpose. Dear students,  In today’s media-rich world, students are constantly surrounded by messages—on screens, in print, and through social platforms. Helping young learners understand how these messages work is an essential life skill, and this formed the focus of a recent MYP 1 lesson on Understanding Media . The lesson introduced students to the idea that media is not just entertainment, but a powerful tool used to communicate information, ideas, and opinions. Students explored different forms of media , including print, digital, and social media, and reflected on where they encounter these messages in their daily lives.
