MYP 4: U1: Jhoothan by Omprakash Valmiki

Dear students

Om Prakash Valmiki’s Jhoothan is a powerful autobiographical account of growing up amid caste-based discrimination. Through personal memories, Valmiki reveals experiences of humiliation, exclusion, inequality, and the struggle for dignity.

The title Jhoothan, meaning leftover food, becomes a powerful symbol of the treatment of marginalised communities and the social inequalities they faced.

Through his first-person narrative, Valmiki transforms personal experience into a voice of resistance, highlighting the importance of education, self-respect, identity, and social justice.

Think & Reflect

  • How does first-person narration make the experience powerful?
  • What does Jhoothan symbolise?
  • How does Valmiki use personal experience to reveal a wider social issue?
  • How can literature give voice to the marginalised?

Key Themes: Identity • Discrimination • Dignity • Resistance • Education • Social Justice
